We all treasure the ability to see the faces of our loved ones and enjoy productive, independent lives. Sadly, there are nearly 300 million people worldwide living with the threat of impending blindness. As the population ages and growing numbers are afflicted with serious eye diseases – including cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration – the Foundation's mission becomes increasingly vital.
You can help us make a difference. Through the reach of the Academy's powerful educational resources and innovative service programs, we provide tangible support to the world's 200,000 ophthalmologists working tirelessly to save their patients' most treasured sense. Together, we can help change lives.
Foundation funding has helped the Academy to make a significant impact in the fight to prevent blindness and visual impairment in the last year alone:
- Ophthalmic News & Education (ONE®) Network access was provided to nearly 27,000 ophthalmologists in 38 developing countries, free of charge.
275 sets of the Basic and Clinical Science Course were shipped to ophthalmology training programs in the developing world with extremely limited resources.
Nearly 70,000 ophthalmologists worldwide are learning the latest surgical techniques and diagnostic advances through the ONE Network, allowing them to provide better patient care.
In the last year, EyeCare America referred nearly 10,000 at-risk patients for medical eye exams at no out-of-pocket cost.
