What We Do

The Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology supports the Academy's priority programs in education, quality of care research and service. Through Foundation funding, these programs provide ophthalmologists with the educational resources they need to administer the best possible patient care.

 Hoskins Center

H. Dunbar Hoskins Jr., MD Center for Quality Eye Care
Launched in 2010, the Hoskins Center is an evidence-based quality of care and health policy research center committed to advancing the highest standards of patient care. The center conducts quality of care research, establishes national outcomes data registries, develops patient care guidelines and performs clinical care evaluations.

 Bruce Spivey

The Spivey Fund was created to support the joint efforts by the Academy and the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company (OMIC) that promote high quality patient care. The Fund will enable the development and dissemination of innovative risk management and patient safety initiatives, studies, and educational programs that will improve the quality of eye care around the world.

Michael R. Redmond, MD Professionalism and Ethics Education Center
and Endowment Fund

Established in memory of esteemed Academy leader Michael R. Redmond, MD, the Center ensures that the Academy's efforts in promoting professionalism and ethics remain dynamic, comprehensive and relevant in an increasingly changing ophthalmic community.
With an emphasis on providing better patient care, the Redmond Center's work includes development of educational courses and lectures, policies, opinions, guidelines and compendiums of professionalism and ethics-related information.

ONE_Network   The Ophthalmic News & Education (ONE®) Network
The ONE Network is the largest online library of ophthalmic knowledge in the world. Currently entering its next major phase of development, the site features state-of-the-art educational tools including surgical videos, instructional podcasts, self-assessments, personalized learning plans and practice guidelines. Building on its solid reputation as a trusted resource developed by the Academy, the ONE Network is already being used by more than 70,000 ophthalmologists worldwide. Through Foundation funding, it is provided free of charge to ophthalmologists in developing countries.

Intl-Outreach

International Outreach Program
For more than 25 years, the International Outreach Program has delivered quality education to all ophthalmologists, regardless of their location or ability to pay. The program provides physicians in developing nations with critical educational resources, such as the Basic and Clinical Science Course and complimentary access to the ONE Network. Through education and innovation, we're helping ophthalmologists provide better patient care in the developing world, where 90 percent of the blind and visually impaired live, and quality educational resources are scarce.

EyeCare America

  EyeCare America®
Many patients cannot afford even the most basic eye care. Since 1985, EyeCare America – the largest public service program of its kind in American medicine – has helped more than 1.7 million people receive the services and eye health education they need. In the last year, the program referred close to 10,000 seniors and at-risk individuals for medical eye exams at no out-of-pocket cost. Through its network of nearly 7,000 volunteer ophthalmologists, EyeCare America helps the medically underserved and those at increased risk for eye disease to preserve their sight and enjoy happier, more productive lives.

  Museum of Vision
Through its treasure trove of archives and artifacts, the Museum of Vision tells countless fascinating stories about ophthalmology's many contributions to medicine. The museum's world-class collection includes Estruscan surgical instruments dating back to 500 B.C., gorgeous lorgnettes from the 1800s, and rare books documenting the profession's groundbreaking discoveries. Your support will help us to protect ophthalmic treasures, provide new exhibits and offer worthwhile educational programs.
