Biographical Note
· Born April19, 1915 in Philadelphia, PA
· 1934 Graduated from University of Pennsylvania with Bachelors of Science
· 1938 Graduated from University of Pennsylvania with MD
· 1943 Graduated from University of Pennsylvania with Doctor of Science
· 1940-1946 fellow at University of Pennsylvania where he worked with Francis Heed Adler
· During WWII Dr. Leopold was a research investigator in chemical warfare for the United States and remained a consultant to the Army until his death
· 1941-1949 Appointed instructor and associate in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Univ. of Penn.
· 1946 Joined the staff of Wills Eye Hospital
· 1949 Named director of research at Wills Eye Hospital
· 1950-1954 Appointed assistant professor in the Graduate School of the Univ. of Penn.
· 1952 Appointed attending surgeon at Wills Eye Hospital
· 1955 Appointed professor of ophthalmology and head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Univ. of Penn.
· 1958 Served as editor-in-chief of the “Survey of Ophthalmology”
· Received Friedenwald Medal from the Association for Research in Ophthalmology
· 1961-1964 Appointed ophthalmologist-in-chief at Wills Eye Hospital
· 1964 Appointed director of the Department of Ophthalmology at Mount Sinai Hospital and clinical professor of ophthalmology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York.
· 1965 Delivered the Edward Jackson Memorial Lecture
· 1967-1975 Served as chairman and professor of the Department of Ophthalmology at Mount Sinai Medical School
· 1972 Served as chairman of the American Board of Ophthalmology
· 1973 Delivered Frederick H. Verhoeff Lecture
· 1974 Received Lucien Howe Medal from the American Ophthalmological Society
· 1975-1985 Served as chairman and professor of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of California in Irvine.
· 1977-1988 Became senior vice president of Allergan Pharmaceuticals
· 1985 University of California in Irvine established the Irving Leopold Chair of Ophthalmology
Dr. Leopold served on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Ophthalmology, the Archives of Ophthalmology, Ocular Inflammation and Therapeutics, American Journal of Diabetes, Investigative Ophthalmology, The Journal of Ocular Pharmacology and the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Dr. Leopold also served in numerous committees of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, the National Institutes of Health, the American Medical Association, the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Research Council.
