Biographical Note
· Born March 30, 1856 in West Goshen, PA
· Graduated Union College, Schenectady, NY (civil engineer)
· 1878 Graduated University of Pennsylvania (MD)
· 1890-1894 and 1896-1898 Worked as a surgeon at Wills Eye Hospital
· 1890-1916 American editor of the “Ophthalmic Review”, London
· 1893 clarified the cross cylinder in measurement of astigmatic errors
· 1894 Moved from Philadelphia to Denver
· 1904 President of American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology (AAOO), 8th Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, IN
· 1904-1917 editor of the “Ophthalmic Year Book”
· 1915 First chairman of American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Jackson administered the first examination on December 11, 1916.
· 1915 founded the Colorado Ophthalmologic Congress
· 1917 Helped to found the Ophthalmic Publishing Company, publishers of the “American Journal of Ophthalmology” (AJO)
· 1918-1931 Editor of the AJO
· 1920 Dr. Jackson’s “Committee on Teaching” provided a 1 day post-graduate course at AAOO Annual Meeting- the Academy’s first instruction course
· 1925 President of Colorado Commission for the Blind
· 1928 Association for Research in Ophthalmology and Vision (originally ARO, now ARVO) created. Jackson was part of the initial discussions and a founding member.
· 1942 Dr. Jackson died
· AAOO established the Jackson Memorial Lecture in 1944, 2 years after his death.
Dr. Jackson also served in these offices: President of the American Ophthalmology Society, President of the Denver County Medical Society, President of the Colorado State Medical Society, Member Royal Society of Medicine, UK, Member Western Ophthalmology Society, Member American Medical Association, Member American Otolaryngology Society, Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado Medical School in Denver.
